Codes and Cons of Openings

Time: As we are students , are not getting payed , haven’t got all the time in the world etc , we are given  deadlines/dates to complete making our opening sequence whereas directors/professional film companies have all the time they need to fully create their masterpieces.

Budget: As we are still just students and  have not yet earnt a living we will have to stick to natural resources, basic equipment etc. to make our film look realistic.    

Location: As we are filming our first couple of shots in the dark it doesn’t matter as much where the location is as the darkness doesn’t give any background features away. However as the rest of our film opening is being filmed outside so we need to select a suitable scene/area to base our free running getaway chase.

Cast: To start it will be hard to find the suitable characters to star in our main task. However if the character doesn’t look like they relate to the role of the film then it will look odd. However if the cast members are capable of playing the certain roles correctly then it will result in a success and look very effective/realistic in the final film opening.

Rob and I decided that we want to base our main task on the genre - action and adventure - as we can really get the most ideas out of it and produce better shots, angles and scenes. Also we feel most comfortable to base it on action as we are both fans of this genre so we have a broad range of ideas that will be useful and aid us in the making of our main task.

Opening scene of film with digetic/non digetic sound

       

This opening scene of the film 'Rush' is a very good example of an opening scene with excellent digetic and non-digetic sounds. Digetic sounds in the scene include the cheerings of the crouds and to the roaring engines of the racecars. However from the sounds of the scene there are slightly more non-digetic sounds being added in which include the main soundtrack being played with violins playing low tones to create a suitable atmosphere for the scene , the commentators and there is a narrative voice talking throughout the scene who is one of the main characters (Nikki Lauda).

All these sounds together create a great build up of tension , grabs the viewers attention instantly and overall rush is a brillant film with an impressive opening scene.

Lighting Workshop

On the 11th November 2015 year 12 and 13 media students attended a lighting workshop that helped us all to learn more on how to use lighting in our videos/blogs. Many techniques were shown by the teachers and were really helpful. Some key shots/clips are shown above in the short video. From the workshop I have learned that lighting can significantly change the atmosphere of the shots , also lighting can easily effect mood/atmosphere inside and the outside of a room/building.
